Chapter 10
“You wanted to talk to us.”
Ben waved us in and pointed to the chairs in front of his desk. “I received an e-mail today from another pack. Actually, every
pack received the e-mail. One member of the Teton Pack, Robert Simmons, has been missing for about four months.”
“Four months! Why are we just hearing about it now?” “That was my initial reaction, too. They are a pretty expansive
pack in a rural area. They don’t have monthly pack runs, and some of them live so far out in the woods and mountains it could be months before anyone hears from them.” Ben waved his hand like he was shooing away our questions. “But anyway, they had someone go to this guy’s house and found it ransacked. His wife was dead. They used her decomposition to determine how long ago she was killed, and that is how they figure that the husband has been missing that long.”
“Oh, that’s terrible.” Chris reached for my hand and rubbed his thumb across my knuckles. “Who found her?”
“The pack beta had not gotten a response to an e-mail he sent them and decided to call. When no one answered or returned his messages, he sent a pack enforcer that lived near there to check on them. That’s who found them. They are trying to get some answers. They don’t think it was the husband who killed the wife, but they can’t find him. All his stuff was there, so he could have just left in wolf form. Who knows? It makes no sense.”
“So what does this have to do with us?”
“It might have nothing to do with you, but it reminded me that we need to figure out about that wolf we have on ice here. Chris, I want you to do whatever you think you can with that. It falls to you as the preserve wildlife director. You need to make it a priority. I don’t want the investigation of this wife and husband to remind the government they have been neglecting us.”
Chris nodded his understanding. “Do you have a laboratory biologist here that can run tests on the body? I can’t do that. I might need to find someone, and that could take a while.”
“It’s already covered. Go to the lab area. Talk to our resident lab rat, Charlie. She handles all the animal illnesses and also handles lab work for the infirmary. She has just been waiting for instructions.”
The lab was on the other side of the office building. I pulled Chris through the halls, since he had not really had a chance to explore them yet and had only seen them briefly on his initial day. Charlie was nose-first in a microscope, jotting notes while never looking up. Her radio was set to the local pop station and was probably loud enough that people a few rooms over could hear.
“I know someone is here. The radio may be loud, but my sniffer works just fine.” Charlie spun in her lab stool to greet us.
